High frequency wordlists are amazing tools! I always liked to make a folder with clear sheet protectors for each of my students. In each sheet protector, I’d put a word list. You can then use a washable marker to star the ones they need to study when you do a mini-conference with each student. It’s a great tool to communicate with home, too! Parents know exactly which words to focus on for the week.

Why not end the pain and suffering now and pull out a contractions worksheet to fix these horrendous grammatical snafus? Pardon my vocabulary this post, but won’t someone please think of the children’s grammar? Do us all a favor and download this worksheet!

To hyphenate, or not to hyphenate, that is the question! It’s always hard for younger students to figure out which words get a space, which ones get a hyphen, and which ones just get glued together. Give them some practice with more common compound words with this sheet from have fun teaching. It’d be easy to add in some extension activities here. Kagan activities where they trade words sounds like a good idea, perhaps a card swap activity where they have to match up the other half of their word with the one another student is holding. Make it fun to learn this!

It also helps build vocabulary when students realize that there is not only one antonym for each word, that words aren’t simply paired together, but actually massive families of similar words. Have your K-5 students look at some of these worksheets on have fun teaching to see which words they can identify as opposites.

Certainly, this could lead into some extension activities, like students writing their own analogies, or having shoulder partners finish each other’s analogies. Give this one a try, and there’s even another worksheet with 50 more if you want to go more in depth!

Need an excellent primary resource to start the year off? How about an alphabet booklet? From A-Z, Have Fun Teaching has pages for each letter, with the letter in upper and lower case and a word that starts with that letter. It’s a great little phonics and letter recognition practice booklet. I can imagine how much kids would love to color their pages and even write more words they learn starting with those letters on them, creating their own little dictionaries. Sounds like a good cooperative learning or ESOL activity as well.
