Learn to love them, because most every standardized test in math or science for the rest of your life will include graphs. Social studies loves to throw in graphs too, just to remind everyone that it’s a subject worth knowing, too. So get to it, learn to label each axis, properly numerate your axis, too, and then draw your major and minor grid lines. And remember… you can tell the kids about Excel and spreadsheets when they’re in college.

Fractions always made a lot of sense to me. I used to push-mow the lawn, and while I did it I’d think about what fraction of it was done. Oh, 7/10 of the yard is cut. Counting is such a keystone skill it’s not even funny. Try doing multiplication or addition when you count 1, 2, 7. Get on it ladies and gentlemen, and have those kids counting to a billion (or thereabouts)! The more the merrier, the higher the better. Practice skip counting by multiples, too. You wouldn’t believe how much that helps when it comes time for multiplication.

As useful as finding places on a map, finding dates on a calendar and understanding how weeks, days, and holidays work is an integral part of our lives. Make it fun and interesting with some free calendar activities. Then have students mark all their favorite holidays, track their attendance with color coding, or keep classroom birthday lists.
