Word Lists

Enhance writing power in time for standardized testing with synonyms and their EVIL cousin, antonyms. Remind students that it’s fun to know as many words as possible for: good, pretty, hot, cold, bad, and all these other common words that we overuse. Do it with a word graveyard! Make little paper tombstones and write the dead word on it. Retire more and more words as weeks go on, so students have to think of newer ones! Practice with this worksheet on synonyms.

Synonym Worksheets

Nothing says back to school for the little ones like mastering sight word lists. I can think of a few good uses for these with ESOL students, too. With all the focus on low reading scores and esol students, mastering theseis tantamount to reading fluency success. Practice them with your students with these worksheets. Other ideas include putting these in clear file so they can tally mark each time they see one of the words in a story or reading passage. You could also use one as the crazy word of the day. When someone says it or read it aloud, everyone does a specific cheer!

Sight Word Worksheets

Need a way to remind your students of those rules for -s, -es, and -ies? Throw this sheet down on their desk come Monday morning, and then flip it over for a 3-column chart. As a team exercise, they can think of more nouns that are pluralized with -s, -es, and -ies. Knock out your cooperative learning, morning work, and part of your language in one shot!

Keep these in a binder to test students or send home these word lists for parents to test their kids on every day. It’s a great school-home connection piece in primary grades.

High Frequency Word Worksheets

High frequency wordlists are amazing tools! I always liked to make a folder with clear sheet protectors for each of my students. In each sheet protector, I’d put a word list. You can then use a washable marker to star the ones they need to study when you do a mini-conference with each student. It’s a great tool to communicate with home, too! Parents know exactly which words to focus on for the week.
