It’s hard to get through the day if a student doesn’t know the names of school supplies. Help your preschooler/kindergartener learn what scissors, erasers, and pencils are. This can be a great way to start your classroom routines and establish classroom rules.

Need a great vocabulary builder? It’s best to learn groups or categories of words at one time, because when we relate words to each other, we have a better chance to remember them. How about some flash cards on people, jobs, family members, or for articles of clothing? This would be a great practice piece for ESL/ELL students, too!

The most important things that first year of school is knowing your numbers, your letters, maybe a few colors, and possibly how to write your name. That shoe-tying thing is somewhere in there as well. Sadly, a lot of kids come to school unable to identify or say their letters, so we’ve got to get them caught up. Do a series of pretests, assessments, and post tests to determine success and growing familiarity with letters. Our free resources will help!

Counting is such a keystone skill it’s not even funny. Try doing multiplication or addition when you count 1, 2, 7. Get on it ladies and gentlemen, and have those kids counting to a billion (or thereabouts)! The more the merrier, the higher the better. Practice skip counting by multiples, too. You wouldn’t believe how much that helps when it comes time for multiplication.

Of course, we didn’t have these fancy worksheets. Get your students’ handwriting up to snuff with these activities, or they’ll have sloppy handwriting for the rest of their lives!

High frequency wordlists are amazing tools! I always liked to make a folder with clear sheet protectors for each of my students. In each sheet protector, I’d put a word list. You can then use a washable marker to star the ones they need to study when you do a mini-conference with each student. It’s a great tool to communicate with home, too! Parents know exactly which words to focus on for the week.

Alphabetizing is a hard skill to teach. It takes practice, practice, and more practice. Why not make your life easier with some worksheets? There are worksheets here for alphabetizing by the first, second, or third letter. I can imagine how this might tie into activities where students alphabetize their classmates by first or last names, or where students alphabetize a collection of books. Lead from hands-on practice into worksheets to check understanding. Great differentiated instruction technique!
