Mix and Math and test your memory! It’s like the shell game but without gambling… because that’s frowned upon in school. But seriously, matching and memory games are great for developing the mind. We all used to play memory games and do mazes as kids. Nowadays kids push their thumbs around a game controller and have a hard time doing much else. Help them flex their mental muscles!

Counting Down From Twenty Song

Just when you thought it was safe to start reading this blog again, I go and make ANOTHER math song post. I won’t write a rhyme though. It seems straightforward and simple, but counting backward is a difficult skill for most kids. It’s nearly as hard as saying your alphabet backwards, which many adults struggle with. This song from have fun teaching’s musical genius puts that skill into a couple minute routine to practice. Give it a try!

Six cracks in mom’s favorite dish.
Six whiskers on mom’s ugly pet rat.
Six diamonds in mom’s favorite barrette.
Six seats around mom’s dinner table.
Six horses in mom’s giant stable.
Six lines in this silly rhyme.

Four times, teddy dog opened it once more.
Four times, I yelled at the beast.
Four times, his tail slapped happily at my feet!

In honor of the start of a series of posts on numbers, I will make a silly rhyme about the number one. Look for more poor attempts at rhyming to come, one for each number from 1 to 12.

There once was one honey bun,
Lacking in glaze, for it had none.
But that was enough for one old nun,
Who had given up on sugar for a season.

Counting is a huge skill in the first few years of school. What many don’t understand is that the patterns in skip counting also helps in multiplication. Practice skip counting with have fun teaching’s skip-counting songs. They have everything from 1’s to 12’s, as well as other math songs. One of the easiest ways to teach this is to have students loud and silent clap numbers.
For example, when counting by 3’s, soft-clap 1, 2, loud clap 3, soft-clap 4, 5, loud clap 6… and so on.
