Shape identification is probably the first piece of geometry that students are asked to learn. It requires classification and visual identification skills. We’ve assembled some books to help out your young ones. Geometry is the most fun part of math, so make it fun for them!

Counting Down From Twenty Song

Just when you thought it was safe to start reading this blog again, I go and make ANOTHER math song post. I won’t write a rhyme though. It seems straightforward and simple, but counting backward is a difficult skill for most kids. It’s nearly as hard as saying your alphabet backwards, which many adults struggle with. This song from have fun teaching’s musical genius puts that skill into a couple minute routine to practice. Give it a try!

In honor of the start of a series of posts on numbers, I will make a silly rhyme about the number one. Look for more poor attempts at rhyming to come, one for each number from 1 to 12.

There once was one honey bun,
Lacking in glaze, for it had none.
But that was enough for one old nun,
Who had given up on sugar for a season.

Review your numbers with your students with these handy numerals flash cards. Then make a number booklet, which kids can illustrate, glue things to, or use stickers for counting. The more ways they see these numbers, the better! You can even do a ‘number walk’ and have kids walk down the hallway, looking for groups of 3, 4, 5, and so forth.

Browse through and practice with these, and then you could have students make change for you from a change drawer as a performance assessment!

Measuring and understanding when to use which unit is most certainly going to be on standardized testing in younger grade levels. Even 4th and 5th grade and into middle school they dabble with capacity and other complicated units, especially metric. Though you might get some resistance from kids who hate having to learn more than just inches and centimeters, this is an amazing life skill. Think how often a day we use gallons, miles, degrees, cups, and a dozen other common measures. There is hardly a person alive who doesn’t need this.
