Verbs are action words, and students need to know how to match them up with a subject to make proper sentences. Not only is the word syllable fun to say, you can also very easily add clapping as a kinesthetic element to lessons with it. Clap, stomp your feet, or pound your desk for each syllable. Try out some worksheets on syllables instead. Drawing lines between syllables, clapping for syllables, or any other number of techniques that help students learn to chunk their letters into standard phonemes are great things. Mix in a little motion and music to this lesson and watch your students smile as they learn.

Nothing says back to school for the little ones like mastering sight word lists. I can think of a few good uses for these with ESOL students, too. With all the focus on low reading scores and esol students, mastering theseis tantamount to reading fluency success. Practice them with your students with these worksheets. Other ideas include putting these in clear file so they can tally mark each time they see one of the words in a story or reading passage. You could also use one as the crazy word of the day. When someone says it or read it aloud, everyone does a specific cheer!
