Once your students start collecting new vocabulary, have them put them up on the wall. If they write them by themselves and then hang them on the wall with the definitions they also hand-wrote, the chance of that word staying in their vocabulary is much higher.

This song is a great beginning science song for children. Classifying animals – or just plain classifying anything – is a great study skill. It helps us compare and contrast and make connections between things. This is way more fun with animals than other stuff, but when they come around to classifying shapes and whatnot, you’ve built a foundation already.

It seems easy, but it’s sometimes hard to separate the subject from the predicate, especially when they start throwing in clauses or shifting sentence order. As long as students can at least find who or what is doing the action and then determine what the action is, they’ve got most of the battle won.
