Blech! Is there anything worse to try to get students to do than write neatly, especially the boys? As a young boy, I remember I had just about the worst handwriting in class. Of course, we didn’t have these fancy worksheets. Get your students’ handwriting up to snuff with these activities, or they’ll have sloppy handwriting for the rest of their lives!

If you read my last post, I said something about Have Fun Teaching organizing their resources not only by subject area, but also by grade level. I’d like to highlight a kindergarten resource now. This activity requires students to circle pictures that are blue. I might put this up on a smartboard, computer screen, or some sort of projector, and then give the students a B&W version to save on ink. Then, once all the words are read describing the pictures, have them color only the blue ones. Then, the blue are all they see! Repeat with other colors to make a color book.

Wouldn’t it be great if some of these worksheet websites not only sorted things by subject area, but also by grade level? Well, Have Fun Teaching has done that. They’ve got K-3 done, and 4-6 are forthcoming. Granted, not everything from the 100′s or 1000′s of worksheets on the site has been sorted yet, but it’s a good start. Not to mention, there are songs that go along with a lot of this material for you to attack your multiple intelligences in lesson planning!

Alphabetizing is a hard skill to teach. It takes practice, practice, and more practice. Why not make your life easier with some worksheets? There are worksheets here for alphabetizing by the first, second, or third letter. I can imagine how this might tie into activities where students alphabetize their classmates by first or last names, or where students alphabetize a collection of books. Lead from hands-on practice into worksheets to check understanding. Great differentiated instruction technique!

Need an excellent primary resource to start the year off? How about an alphabet booklet? From A-Z, Have Fun Teaching has pages for each letter, with the letter in upper and lower case and a word that starts with that letter. It’s a great little phonics and letter recognition practice booklet. I can imagine how much kids would love to color their pages and even write more words they learn starting with those letters on them, creating their own little dictionaries. Sounds like a good cooperative learning or ESOL activity as well.

What a great way to get back into class with the little guys! Have them practice writing their name with this fancy worksheet. They could even do fun activities on the back, like drawing a picture of their family or something like that to introduce themselves to you and the class. I can imagine quite a nice bulletin board being made out of these, or a nice hall display.
