Here’s another great national holiday commemorating our armed forces and what they have done for us. Formerly Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I, it was switched to Veteran’s Day in 1954. What a great way to remember Veterans who have made this country what it is. Try contacting your local VFW or American Legion. Many of them are happy to come out and do a flag-folding ceremony or something of that like for you. They have a lot to say and love to give back. As a way of showing appreciation, write letters and color pictures for them. They’ll love the effort and attention of any child that honors their time spent and sacrifices made on behalf of our nation.

Getting away from the religious holidays, we go back into our nation’s holidays with President’s Day. Depending on where you’re from, this could either be just Washington’s birthday or a day to remember Washington and Lincoln. Regardless, this is a great piece of national pride and history in February, getting our minds of that candy-filled holiday just a week or so before. Teach your students about our first president or all of our presidents, using some quick little activities that would surely be a great part of a presidents’ booklet.

Another Christian Holiday of importance, this one comes from the Old Testament instead of the New. Remembering the story in Egypt when the people of Israel were spared the terrible wrath on the night of Passover, these free activities might be a good way to help supplement a sunday school lesson or religious class lesson for younger students.

It’s hard to compare to Christmas or your birthday when you’re a little kid, but maybe we can push one of the other holidays onto them as a close 4th or 5th (Halloween’s teeth-rotting experiences can’t compete). New Years is often considered a new beginning in many cultures. Maybe a fresh start at school, leaving behind the not-getting-homework-done work ethic or not-gonna-like-anyone sort of attitudes, might be advisable. Embrace the new year with some resolutions meant to be kept and some fun activities from have fun teaching. Maybe your best kids will get better, and the ones who really need to change might come around with them.

I can almost taste the feminine bitterness my warm Father’s Day post left behind. Mothers were left fuming, and people have written off my posts forever! Not to let hard feelings go unaddressed, I’ve gotten around to posting about the other wonderful half of the parenting world: Mothers! Never to be forgotten for all those sandwiches with crusts cut off packed in brown bags, all that laundry done so we weren’t smelly kids, all the soothed hurts and bandaged knees, I wanted to make sure we posted about Have Fun Teaching’s Ode to Motherhood, done via worksheets and activities that most certainly have a place on fridges everywhere. Thanks Mom!

Memorial Day is one of our most important national holidays. Most countries have something similar, a day to honor our fallen soldiers. This seems like an amazing opportunity to teach our young minds to respect the sacrifices others have made to give them the opportunities they now have. In addition to social studies lessons or writing letters of thanks to our soldiers or to local branches of our armed forces, it might be good to take a look at some of the patriotic-themed activities have fun teaching offers.
