October is a great time to be doing Fall activities, unless you live in the southern hemisphere, anyway. Assuming you don’t, let’s kick this off with a first grade reading comprehension activity. Students in the south or in arid climates might find northern USA’s Fall season interesting. Similarly, those in the north might find the season of Fall pretty different in the south. This is a great time to pull in prior knowledge and maybe even have your own classroom fall festival!

If you read my last post, I said something about Have Fun Teaching organizing their resources not only by subject area, but also by grade level. I’d like to highlight a kindergarten resource now. This activity requires students to circle pictures that are blue. I might put this up on a smartboard, computer screen, or some sort of projector, and then give the students a B&W version to save on ink. Then, once all the words are read describing the pictures, have them color only the blue ones. Then, the blue are all they see! Repeat with other colors to make a color book.

Wouldn’t it be great if some of these worksheet websites not only sorted things by subject area, but also by grade level? Well, Have Fun Teaching has done that. They’ve got K-3 done, and 4-6 are forthcoming. Granted, not everything from the 100′s or 1000′s of worksheets on the site has been sorted yet, but it’s a good start. Not to mention, there are songs that go along with a lot of this material for you to attack your multiple intelligences in lesson planning!

They also need to know a variety of them, so every sentence isn’t about eating, sleeping, talking, or running. Get them practicing with a quick worksheet from have fun teaching. Then have them brainstorm more verbs they know with their partners. You could even start a verb wall in your classroom!

Enhance writing power in time for standardized testing with synonyms and their EVIL cousin, antonyms. Remind students that it’s fun to know as many words as possible for: good, pretty, hot, cold, bad, and all these other common words that we overuse. Do it with a word graveyard! Make little paper tombstones and write the dead word on it. Retire more and more words as weeks go on, so students have to think of newer ones! Practice with this worksheet on synonyms.

Not only is the word syllable fun to say, you can also very easily add clapping as a kinesthetic element to lessons with it. Clap, stomp your feet, or pound your desk for each syllable. Try out some worksheets on syllables instead. Drawing lines between syllables, clapping for syllables, or any other number of techniques that help students learn to chunk their letters into standard phonemes are great things. Mix in a little motion and music to this lesson and watch your students smile as they learn.
